The Fullerton Community Rotaract Club (FCRC) Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity”

The Fullerton Community Rotaract Club volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Orange County at the San Juan Capistrano site Saturday February 20, 2010. Habitat has many different opportunities to volunteer, such as hospitality, faith relations and youth activities. FCRC members chose to help with the construction site. The 5 volunteers on the 20th helped paint the trim on houses and swept the floors of the houses as they became dirty. At this location there were 5 houses being built at one time. Habitat builds houses for families in need; some could be soldiers from Iraq or a family with a member that requires medical help or a family that strives to live in a better community. The families that receive these houses have to do a certain amount of hours to help build their house if they are 18 years or older and are physically able to do so. FCRC is planning to volunteer with Habitat at least once a month. All of the club members feel honored to be working with such a great organization. They are serving others before themselves, just as Rotary’s motto states, “Service above Self.”.

FCRC & CSULB RC @ UCLA Dance Marathon 02-13-2010

The Fullerton Community Rotaract Club and the CSULB Rotaract Club at the UCLA Dance Marathon

On February 13-14, 2010, UCLA held its 9th annual Dance Marathon. Participants in the event raised a total of over $407,000 for the fight against pediatric AIDS. All proceeds went to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Project Kindle, and One Heartland. Fullerton Community Rotaractors and CSULB Rotaractors danced for 26 hours straight. Other Fullerton Community Rotaract Club members volunteered to help set up and clean up. Together, both Rotaract clubs raised $750 dollars for the cause. (Dancers were required to find humanitarians to sponsor them.) The dancers described the event as some of the best experiences they ever had. They learned the Dance Marathon motto: “When there is a cure we’ll dance for joy, until then we dance for life,” and now plan to incorporate it in their lives. Janki Shah, one member of The Fullerton Community Rotaract Club, said that at one moment she thought she lost her mind, as she was going in circles and trying to forget about the pain in her legs. Despite this, she persevered and gave this great message to other dancers: “Do whatever you need to do if it helps you to keep going.” Even after staying on their legs for 26 hours, the Rotaractors would like to make a tradition of participating in Dance Marathon in future years.

UCI Poker Night 01-29-2010

Rotaract at UCI’s Poker Night

On January 29th, 2010, Rotaract at UCI hosted their very first big fundraising event on the UCI campus, a poker night. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club of district 5320, and many other private business sponsors, our club raised over $1000 of profit. We have decided to donate half of our profits to the Haiti relief effort; our hearts go out to the families and people affected by the tragic events that occurred there.

There were over 80 people in attendance of this event, a few of which were members of Rotary clubs in District 5320. We would like to thank them for showing their support and help in making our poker night a great success. We would also like to give a special thanks to our sponsoring Rotary Club, the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club, for helping us plan and prepare the event. Also an extremely special thanks to Dr. Shannon Burns and Mr. Earl Zulch of the Newport-Irvine club, because they truly exemplified Rotary’s spirit and cordiality. We could not have done it without you!

CCERC Laguna Beach Hike 02-13-2010

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Each month, the Cerritos College Environmental Rotaract Club does a hike in the surrounding Los Angeles and Orange counties. The hike is a positive event which gives club members an opportunity to socialize. This month, we did a 2 mile trail in Laguna Niguel, CA. The hike was easy, yet breathtaking. We spied soaring hawks and had encounters with very colorful flowers. This was a fun and memorable experience, as we witnessed the Laurel Trail in Laguna Niguel together.

FCRC Chocolate Fantasy 02-05-2010

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

The Fullerton Community Rotaract Club (FCRC) Volunteering at the 18th Annual YWCA “Chocolate Fantasy”

The “Chocolate Fantasy” Silent Auction was the Fullerton Community Rotaract Club’s first big service event of 2010 held at the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park on Friday, February 5, 2010. “Chocolate Fantasy” is presented annually by the YWCA of North Orange County. The purpose of the night is to celebrate the good work of the YWCA of North Orange County and to honor two people for their outstanding contributions to their communities. The event is also a fundraiser to help the YWCA continue to reach out to over 20,000 girls. The YWCA’s projects include: helping women who cannot afford breast cancer screenings receive the necessary care, collecting gently-used formal wear for girls through their “Prom Project”, the Thurmond Scholarship for women, and giving self defense training to girls who regularly use public transportation.

The members of FCRC are honored to have been a part of “Chocolate Fantasy” this year. It was an evening filled with friends and service. FCRC members worked as cashiers and helped deliver prizes to auction winners, and also served as cleaning staff when the evening was over.

The Fullerton Community Rotaract Club would like to congratulate Griff and Jan Duncan for receiving the honor of “YWCA’s Man and Woman of the Year” and thank them for their contribution to the local performing arts and our community.
